New Procedure To Test Long COVID

Just recently, doctors are testing more for Long COVID. They are going through training to help them understand what is happening. And they are encouraged to use their tool kit to rule out other conditions and make a diagnosis.

As a result, your doctor will ask about your symptoms and the impact on your life. While doing so, they are encouraged not to look for a COVID-19 diagnosis. That will not help as having had COVID-19 is not necessary for a Long COVID diagnosis. In fact, nearly a third of Long Covid sufferers were asymptomatic. Doctors need another way to test for Long COVID.

Testing for Long COVID

To test for Long COVID, your doctor will account for your medical history and assess all symptoms. They will evaluate your condition from the beginning to your current symptoms.

Then your doctor will do some tests and refer you to others. That way, health care professionals can investigate your symptoms and rule out any other conditions.

Even though there is no specific test to diagnose Long COVID, now doctors are urged to check for known complications like blood clots. They can find that with a blood test. Your doctor may check for:

  • full blood count
  • electrolytes
  • kidney function
  • liver function
  • troponin, to test for heart muscle damage
  • inflammation levels
  • muscle damage
  • D-dimer, to check that no blood clots are present
  • heart health
  • iron levels

Due to long COVID symptoms exhibiting in many places and changing over time, testing will vary depending on your symptoms. They could include:

  • urine test
  • blood pressure and heart rate and rhythm
  • temperature
  • lung and breathing function
  • chest X-ray
  • exercise tolerance test
  • ECG (electrocardiogram) to check for heart problems

You may have other tests depending on your symptoms. For example, with mental health symptoms, like depression or anxiety, doctors might refer you to therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

Overall, Long COVID tests can help you to find damage. Then you can work on fixing the damage to recover from Long COVID.
